
Timeline for High School Students
Freshman and/or sophomores
Complete informational form. Discuss academic goals, interests, course choices, extracurricular activities and summer programs. Introduce students to college search websites.
Discuss schedule of standardized tests including SAT, SAT II, ACT and tutoring resources.
Junior Year (fall)
Review college searches and prepare a tentative list of colleges. Discuss what to look for on a college tour (go over sheet in binder) and how to ace the college interview. Learn how to create a resume and how to ask for teacher recommendations. Review plan for taking standardized tests or in the alternative discuss test optional schools.
Junior Year (spring)
Review college visited by student. Discuss scores on standardized tests. Finalize list and break into categories: reach, target, safety schools. Review and finalize resume. Help choose personal statement topic from common application essay prompts. Provide tips for writing an essay including topic selection and editing.
Discuss financial aid/merit scholarships.
Summer before Senior Year (July or August)
Review and finalize resume and essay. Step by step tips on completing the common application and the individual college supplements.
Discuss early decision, early action, rolling admission and regular decision along with deadlines.
Senior Year (September)
Finalize application. Review all items to send to colleges.
